Where It All Began for Modern Finance
How Banking and Trade Laid the Foundations of Modern Finance
Hey Go-Getter,
Today, we’re still in Florence, where banking is booming, and fortunes are being made (and sometimes lost) faster than you can say “gold florin.” Picture this: majestic buildings filled with people exchanging currencies, handling loans, and financing ventures across Europe. This is the birthplace of modern finance.
Bankers like Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici (Lorenzo’s grandfather) were pivotal in developing concepts we now know as credit, loans, and interest rates. They were the risk-takers who financed traders, artists, and inventors. Without them, a lot of the Renaissance’s greatness might never have happened.
Ol' Mo leans over and says, “Ya see, folks, these banks weren’t just counting coins—they were building dreams.”
The Medici Bank itself was one of the first to finance large-scale trade across borders, essentially creating international business as we know it. These bankers didn’t just see numbers; they saw opportunities—and they helped others see them too.
Quick Tip from Ol' Mo:
Building a business requires capital, whether you’re starting out or scaling up. Look into funding sources that align with your values and goals, whether through traditional banks, credit unions, or crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Just like the Medici’s clients, you need backers who believe in what you’re building.
